  1. admin Says:

Early April, a new squat has been opened in London. Called the « two point two », it aims at becoming a social centre, to be launched for the April2008 action days. The space will host an art exhibition, a squatters estate agents, skill sharing workshops and discussions along with films and a cafe.

    More info in here.

  2. admin Says:

On April 5th, a demonstration in support of autonomous spaces and squats took place in Amsterdam, announcing the april2008 action days. Some 200 people took part, together with sound-systems, street theatre, and speeches. Some photos and a report in dutch are available here.

  3. Leuven Says:

    Leuven, 11 april 2008

    X

  7. News from the UK Says:

Bristol UK. A vacant city centre building, the Little Theatre in Colston Street, was occupied this morning by homeless Bristolians as part of a co-ordinated day of action round the world.

  8. New Nottingham squat in UK Says:

The new squat, which has been occupied as part of the weekend of action for free culture and autonomous spaces has so far been successfully taken. Please come along, we really need people to help clear the space and make it one of our own! So where is it? The building is known as the Old County Hall, 23 High Pavement, Nottingham City, UK. It is the building straight opposite the Galleries of Justice.

  9. Birminghams new squat in UK Says:

We have now occupied the building for this weekend’s events.
The building is the former Kingfield Heath stationer’s offices and
warehouse, between Bradford Street and Warwick Street in Digbeth, Birmingham (on the 50 bus route and very near the Spotted Dog pub).

  10. Squatters Estate Agents Opens In London Says:

As part of the series of events taking place in various London autonomous spaces over the weekend of the 11th and 12th April, a squatters estate agents has been set up with a display showing a number of empty properties around London along with details about their location, history and suitability for squatting. The properties range for abandoned houses and flats, to pubs, shops and even government buildings. Some would suit small residential squats and others grand large scale housing communities, squat cafes, freeshops or social centres.

The squatters estate agents is based at a new squatted venue in Bowl Court, Shoreditch and opens Saturday at 10am.

  11. (UK) Nottingham's Old County Hall Occupied Says:

People have occupied the Old County Hall in Nottingham as part of the international days of action for free culture and autonomous spaces. The building, also known as ‘the Judges’ Lodgings’ has both a fascinating history and is a building of outstanding beauty.

At some point the County Council gained ownership over the property and housed various offices in it. In 2000 they sold it and while it has switched owners at various times, it has remained empty for years. Until now that is of course as people will be putting this marvellous and significant building back into good use.

  12. Birmingham UK Says:

A temporary autonomous zone -a squatted warehouse - has been established in Birmingham UK for the weekend, and we will be carrying on to Sunday at least.

The building - privately owned - is in a part of the city key to the council plans for gentrification.

  14. svn Says:

already yesterday, on the 10th of April, organized the Besetztes Haus in Erfurt a demonstration which surprised the authorities due to fake announcements for a street party made in advance. The police could not find the party in the city center, as claimed on flyers before but had to deal with a group of about 150 people which arbitrarily proceed through the city and could pass by at all important spots in the city center. eventually the police could surround and stop the demonstration. this resulted in the legal announcement of a spontaneous demonstration which stopped in the city center to play football and the final announcements at the Anker.

  15. svn Says:

in Rostock, the Global Actions Days started at 3pm at the Doberaner Platz. Some people already “occupied” a children’s playground besides the place with lawn chairs. This resulted in the arrival of about 8 personal carriers of the police and some patrol cars. Eventually, the police checked the ids of the playground occupants.

  18. admin Says:

In Dijon, France, a group of some 80 people gathered in front of the Préfecture (local representation of the state), blocked the road with banners (”Solidarity with illegal immigrants” & “Free Ivan & Bruno now!”) and filled the street with smokebombs, in solidarity with two activists, Ivan & Bruno, who are waiting for their trial in jail, accused of “terrorism” after being caught with smokebombs, on their way to an illegal immigrants’ solidarity march. After an hour of successful road-blockade and chanting slogans, demonstrators left. The police stood near throughout the action with a few vans, but didn’t make any move.

Early February, the police had carried a series of arrests and raids within the activist community, throwing people in jail and making up accusations out of nothing (like carrying smoke bombs, which has been common practice in demonstrations for years), while the media made headlines of an alledged “resurgence of anarchist and autonomous terrorism”, linking it with squats and radical left writings.

Called by a prisonner solidarity collective, together with RUSF21 and RESF21 (two illegal immigrants’ support group), today’s action meant to express a clear rejection of the increasing repression of social movements that has been happening in France over the past few months.

    Saturday 12 April

New squatted social centre in Barcelona

19:00 Around 200 people gathered in Plza de la Virreina, Gracia, Barcelona to walk through the neighbourhood - flyposting details of up-coming events in the city (events against speculation, solidarity with the bus drivers strike etc.) and making pro-squat and anti-police graffitti. The demo passed by the bricked up shells of many evicted social centres in the neighbourhood, decorating them with graffitti and posters explaining the history behind the now lifeless buildings.

20:00 The demo arrived at Ronda General Mitre, 9 (in the Plaza Lesseps), and people, protected by the demonstration, succeeded in entering the long-empty building in good old-skool punk style! The new squat was then secured while people outside handed out flyers to those passing by, explaining the social, political and economic reasons for occupying the building.

The new social centre is called the Ateneo Mayo ‘37, to commemorate May 1937, the year the bourgeois republic and the communists (who today talk so much about historic memory) put an end to almost a year of social revolution. Another group, the M.I.L. chose this name forty years ago for their publishing house, which they financed through bank robbery… We chose this name because, although history is told by the winners, the true history of this city is in the revolts and the barricades, not in the universal expos or the olympics!

We aim to spread critical thought and action against the system, and to support other similar struggles.

The public space was occupied in Dortmund today. A spontaneous demonstration was announced which requested the creation of free and autonomous spaces in the city. About 30 persons joined the demo initially. People provided food, a lot of fun, games, etc. Later, the demonstration joined the “Dominique” anti-repression demo at the Freitreppen which resulted in between 100 and 200 people having an outdoor vegetarian barbecue.

Today on the pre-election-day to renew the national governament, a block of squatters, masked as politicians, brought 400 hundreds pounds of concrete wall and brix ruins of a former evected squat in the front of the entrance in the turin city hall. During the action some flyers flow up, and a flag with this message: “Chi vota paga e i danni sono suoi” The more you vote, the more you pay-and the ruins are yours” was attached.
The group get back quietly and no one was stopped.

    Sorry for the english.

    FUCK THE LAW
    SQUAT THE WORLD

This is the italian version of the flyer:

    RUINS ONLY RUINS-MACERIE SOLO MACERIE

Macerie solo e soltanto macerie avete prodotto in tutti questi anni.

    SQUATTERS ON THE MOVE

  56. rotterdam Says:

Tour de Squat – Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Today started at 13h in Rotterdam at Noordplein the Tour de Squat. The meaning of this bicycle tour was to show that squatting is a part of the culture of a city. We cycled through the areas of ‘het oude noorden’ (the old north), ‘crooswijk’, ‘kralingen’,
Centre and ‘kop van zuid’ (head of south) and in almost every street we passed a squat, an ex squat or a hole where first a squat was.

There were 30 people and there was a very good atmosphere. No police and one reporter of the mainstream press. We cycled and came by (among others): het hotel (the hostel), de Paardenval (the Horsetrap), de Boeg, de Rottepoort (Gate of the Rotte = river), het EKV Eigen Risico (squatrestaurant Own Risk) – we stopped there to eat and drink a bit. Then we went further to de Slagerij (the Butchery), de School (The School) we had a quick peak inside, de Villa (the Villa), Squat Vitrine, het Slaakhuys, Hang, Locus 010, Op-stand (Rise – up), Poortgebouw, Discomfort bar. We ended in the Nijverheidsstraat. I didn’t mention a lot of houses that have no name of their own.

We started cycling at 13.30 and were finished at 17.30. In the end there was also a part of the route we didn’t go to, because it was already too long. So in the end we didn’t see (among others) de Onrust (the Unrest), het Boogje and the Groene Voltage (the Green Voltage).

    Also nice to know:

    There were 9 (former) squatrestaurants:
Paardenval (Horsetrap), Hektiek en Bonen (Hectic and Beans), Eigen Risico (Own Risk), de Fridge (the Fridge), Hexe, Slaak, Hangry, Katerkafe (Hangover bar), Poortgebouw.

Also we saw houses where (in the past or now):
    *people lived
*former giveaway house (for squatters temporarily without home)
*3 squat cinemas (1 still working)
    *6 give away shops
*Squats where lessons were given in Dutch, Spanish, Karate, Capoeiro
*Squats where have been parties and concerts
*Squats where artists worked and made expositions

And 1 person who was cycling (and didn’t help with the route) had lived in 6 houses!

We have cycled through a small part of Rotterdam. There are so many other squats and places that are worth mentioning. It is more of a coincidence that we cycled this route. You could cycle trough every part of Rotterdam, because in every part are squats. In almost every street at least a former one has been. A lot of the evicted houses are demolished, but the ground is empty already for a long time. At a lot of places where squatters lived first are now people living with a bigger wallet. It shows why we squat. So much is empty, so much is unused. And the long term plans are no good for people who don’t have much money.

Also in Rotterdam squatting will continue!

Next year a new route in different areas!
For example visiting: Snellinckstraat, Lincke Soep, de Fabriek (the Factory), Polish Art Galery, Roos in Faas, Buik op Zuid (Belly at South) etc. etc. Ideas are welcome!

after disrupting the annual Labour Party Conference in Wellington, New Zealands capital city, we went back to local legalized squat radical social centre 128 community house where a reclaim the streets was organised, about 120 people appeared throughout the night, police repression continued and there wasn’t the numbers to hold the street down. One of the two fires was extinguished by fire brigades. A solidarity message from germany was read out. Police eventually confiscated equipment (most of it was secured in the houses) after and overall radical and wicked day with No Arrests!~

  62. House squattes in Umeå, Sweden Says:

On Friday a house in central Umeå called “Tullkammaren” was squatted as part of the April 2008 initiative and as a protest to the present normalization process in Sweden, the EU and the rest of the world.

Some 30 people entered the building around 17:00 on Friday and barricades were built quickly, followed by banners dropped from windows with messages like “Struggle for Ungdomshuset”, “Support for the autonomous meeting spaces of Europe: Ungdomshuset, Köpi, EKH, Blitz & Soumi Squatters”, “Fight for a world with space for many worlds”, “More free spaces” etc.

At 18:00 a press release was sent and journalists and cops started to show up, as well as supporting friends. In the press release it was made clear that the house was to be occupied until midnight and that the action was to be made without violence. There was some dialog with the police and later the inhabitants ate, played and played guitar while the sun set outside. Later 4 young activists tried to leave but were identified even though the cops promised not to. It’s unclear if they will be charged.

After a meeting in the house it was decided that the occupation ended at 23 and the occupiers left through a cellar door and got away. We want to thank everyone involved and hope for more squatted houses in Umeå, Sweden and the rest of the world!

The house “Tullkamaren” has been empty a number of years in the center of Umeå and we see it as a big hypocrisy that a house of that size can be empty while youth centers are closed and people live on the streets. We also want to raise attention about the need of alternative meeting spaces by supporting the existing ones and also future ones.

  63. at.indymedia.org Says:

    Update from Austria, Sunday 13:

The squatters left Lousie in Linz without contact with the police and organised a free breakfast in the center.

Project A-Z in Graz is still squatted. Cultural program is running.

Sunday, April 13, 18:30: In Vienna the Building in Spitalgasse 11 is still squatted, A good deal more than 100 people are in the space, some workshops are running, in one floor people are playing football. The clowns army is on the street and supports the police, quite a few supporters in front of the building.

But more an more police as well as ambulance are arriving. The police already went on the roof of the neighbouring house, but many activists are on the roof of the squat now and the police left. At the ground the police started to redirect the traffic. It seems that the police is preparing an eviction…

  64. Freiraum Piraten Freiburg Says:

In Freiburg, four Days of Infos and Action took place. On thursday we had a rainy Wagenburg-Bar-PArty with great DIY-Pizza and networking. On Friday “Freiburg — Polizeiburg” (Film about Squatting in Freiburg in the 80ies) was projected in KTS, we had great food, Punk Gigs and more exchange about plans of action made and realized throughout the world.

On the 12th, we started the Bike-Freespace-Rallye (”Reclaim Freiburg 2″) at about 1 p.m. with great weather and an unanounced street-party in the alternative district “Grün”. A lot of Police (more than 300) was in the city, when we started the Rallye with four groups of about 15 people. Diferent actions where led against local housing politics, police repression, gentrification, biking-prohibitions and so on.

The four Blocks (”White Noise”; “pink cake”; “yellow sticks”; “Black Blümchen Block”) used bikes most of the time and grew, as they where coming past the little Street Party on Adler- and Grether-Straße. Food and Drinks where served and the place, which was closed off by curtains hung in the Streets.
After three hours of decentral actions and putting up Banners on empty houses, about 100 made a spontaneous demonstration through the city center to block the main square “just as if”. After speeches about the Action Days and local shit-politix, the crowd went further on, towards the Augustinerplatz. There, a new street party happened and the different groups could play the LPs they where carrying throughout the rallye. They all won a dance, to different styles of music…

The DIY-Kitchern got blockaded on the Schwabentorring during that time, so two dozens of activists started emtying the blocaded vehicle. That put a bit of tension, the Police-chief let a hundred cops onto the lower square, but put told’em them to retreat after 20 minutes of negotiation. Then a final illegal demo accompanied the soundsystem back to the KTS. We had no repression from th police, a part from filming and blocading the food.
Great to see that so many things happened - See you in Berlin End of May!

  68. free salzburg Says:

on saturday there was a demonstration right in front of the cultural epicenter of salzburg, the festspielhaus. a soundsystem was put up in order to get attention for the terrible situation of young culture movements and autonomous spaces in the city. about 60 people showed up and lots of info was distributed.

since there is absolutely nowhere to go for us we have to start making party in the streets!

  69. No Angel Says:

On the night of Friday 11th April offices of Angel Group in Leeds Uk came under attack. This was part of the days of action in support of squats and autonomous spaces.
Angel group make their money by providing poor quality housing for asylum seekers, profitting from vulnerable people and racist asylum laws.

This company were targetted as part of the days of action in support of squats and autonomous spaces because housing is a right, not a means to make profit. This company are known to exploit their position of providing housing to vulnerable people who are not in a position to complain, getting away with providing substandard accomodation.

The front of the Angel group offices were redecorated, slogans painted, and locks glued. 12 company vehicles were attacked with paint stripper, spray paint, and had their tyres slashed.

This should send a message to Angel that their racist business will not be tolerated.

Painting, writing, free movies and food also… Surprisingly the city has agreed to let us use the house and we are very happy about it.
