As the global economy grinds to a halt so too do the big capital development projects, luxury apartment blocks and shopping complexes that have threatened us with displacement for so long.

Meanwhile, this new round of crisis capitalism leaves thousands out of work, buried in debt and facing immanent home repossession. Instead of housing the homeless in these empties or canceling the debts of millions governments pump billions into the banks to save this rotten system and violently repress those that resist.

As a movement we have been on the back-foot for too long – now its time to start taking things back – to kick capitalism while its down and liberate the land from privatised enclosure; to take housing and create space where we can live outside of monetary exchange, share skills acquired through struggle thus far and reach out beyond our practiced modes of resistance to a proactive attack.

From Dijon to Berlin to the thousands of places where actions took place in defence of squats and autonomous spaces in April 2008 a process has begun, new groups have formed, networks grown, and more people have become involved. As a movement we recognise that power and domination must be contested at multiple sites – this is beauty of our mode of struggle and why we call for decentralised, coordinated and confrontational action on the on the 18th & 19th of September 2009.

We feel it necessary to meet at a time when those at the top are losing their grip to discuss ways we can work together to change our world from the bottom up. New spaces and opportunities are opening all around us and there is a growing potential for more widespread recognition of the need for autonomous housing action. The threat of eviction and homelessness hangs over more people every day. There are over a billion squatters in the world. Now is the time to build a stronger network of resistance.

THIS IS A CALLOUT
This is a callout for all those involved in securing and maintaining squats and autonomous spaces across the UK, and beyond, to meet and discuss issues that affect us all as a community. Following on from the hugely successful national meeting in Leeds last year, and many smaller local gatherings, that have happened throughout the year, this year’s meet up will be in the Bristol area. Please bring your positive energy, enthusiasm and thoughts to share skills and engage in open dialogue.

Opening the Doors to autonomy: 

On the 29th of November Bristol Space Invaders will be holding a day long event of art, activities and workshops aimed at creating DIY solutions to the problems facing many of us as the economic crisis begins to bite.Our group formed in April 2008 in response to an international call-out for actions in defence of squats and autonomous spaces and held an event on Colston Street, Bristol in a disused building in which we installed art, info, ran workshops and put on caberet and live music for the evenings entertainment. This was tied in with a carnival parade through Stokes Croft and St Pauls against gentrification and colosure of clubs in this area.This time we want to share the practical know-how on to reclaim the city and begin to live outside of the economic exchange – we have put on art and music before and done it well but we’re less interested in providing another experience to come and consume  – instead we aim to provide the tools to participate.Our next event entitled “Opening the Doors to Autonomy” will include workshops on the legality and practicalities of squatting and resisting repossession/eviction, gentrification, urban foraging/skipping, radical recycling, a bike workshop, Tai-Chi & self defence, screenprinting and DIY wireless internet among other activities yet to be confirmed. WHO ARE BRISTOL SPACE INVADERS?

We are a diverse bunch of enraged creatives, DIY tinkers and thinkers, dreamers and schemers drawn together by common threads but mostly by our indignation at the impending grip of corporate expansion on our city.  By that we mean the privatization of social space (aka if you havnt paid you can get out!), the plague of yuppy flats and identikit supermarkets, the marriage of local council to business interests and the rising rents and house prices that come as a result of all this and make our own neighbourhoods sterile, boring and out of reach for all but a privileged elite.We are aware of the social division in our city and refuse to be evicted or deported from the centre because we do not fit a certain income bracket or pertain to the correct market segment. And we recognize that the changes we see in Bristol are part of global processes but that does not mean we are powerless to resist them – because we too form part a global process.

SO WHAT?

Rather than hold a protest to ask others to change things for us, we believe in the confrontational reclaiming of social space – taking spaces back with our hands rather than lobbying, paying or praying for others to do it for us… we are creative and work as a collective be it making art, taking housing, holding workshops, discussions, talks, films, food/swap-shops, music, info-stalls, performances & open mic nights to name but the tips of icebergs. We are non hierarchical – we don’t follow leaders – and make decisions, openly and as a group, we reject prejudice and racism in all its forms. If any of that strikes a chord with you – or simply sounds like fun – join us We welcome your input, criticism, ideas, apprehensions and vision. Ca y est, les flics ont pris leur revanche sur le Toboggan : de mercredi 2 juillet à 16h, jusqu’au lendemain matin 8h, ils ont pris position en force autour du bâtiment (laissé vide par les squatteurs et squatteuses depuis quelques jours).

Une équipe d’ouvriers du BTP a travaillé à “dévitaliser” puis deux jours plus tard la pelleteuse rongeait petit à petit les murs pour n’en laisser qu’un amas de gravats…

Un projet urgent sur ce lieu ? “Nous on n’en sait rien”, nous disent les ouvriers, “on a juste été appelés pour la destruction”…

Devant le tas de gravats quelques propos s’échangent, des enfants : “la maison était vide”, “oui mais ils n’avaient pas le droit”. Mais aussi quelques flics venant contempler le désastre, le secteur était effectivement bien bouclé, police municipale, nationale, des agents à la circulation et des flics en civils veillaient à la lente avancée du bulldozer…

À la fin de la journée, comme promis, il ne restait plus rien du Toboggan…

Mardi 24 juin, à 15h15, les flics tentent en vain d’expulser le squat du Toboggan.

Peu après 15h, ce mardi 24 juin 2008, une soixantaine de CRS a bloqué la rue Charles Dumont, pour tenter de procéder à l’expulsion du squat “Le Toboggan”.

Les policiers ont défoncé les portes du bâtiment à l’aide de béliers, grimpé quatre à quatre les escaliers jonchés d’obstacles et répandu sans vergogne du gaz lacrymogène à l’intérieur du grenier dans lequel étaient barricadés les occupant·e·s.

Cependant, ils n’ont pas réussi à venir à bout des barricades du dernier étage, ni à gagner le toit de la maison, sur lequel s’étaient retranché·e·s la petite vingtaine de squatteur·euse·s.

Dépitée et jugeant manifestement l’évacuation techniquement impossible dans ces conditions, la police a sonné la fin de l’opération et a quitté les lieux, non sans casser et renverser tout ce qui se trouvait sur son passage.

En parallèle, la police s’attaquait au Mât-Noir alors qu’aucun occupant ne se trouvait sur les lieux. Les issues du bâtiment ont été murées, le toit démonté.

Le Toboggan a été rebarricadé après le passage énergique mais sans succès des CRS. Un an après la première expulsion du Toboggan, la résistance collective a permis aujourd’hui une joyeuse revanche ! Merci encore aux voisin·e·s solidaires et celleux qui se sont déplacé·e·s dans la rue.

Contre la gestion capitaliste du logement, et contre l’accumulation de biens sans usage par des propriétaires ou institutions, nous continuerons à occuper des espaces vides pour en faire des lieux de vie et d’activités autonomes, hors des logiques de profit et de consommation !

Le Toboggan et le Mât-Noir, c’est quoi ?

La première occupation du Toboggan remonte à septembre 2006, quand une dizaine de personnes avaient investi ce bâtiment abandonné depuis de nombreuses années, appartenant à la Mairie de Dijon. Celle-ci avait alors mené campagne pour tenter de criminaliser une occupation fort bien accueillie par le quartier, et d’en expulser les habitant·e·s, prétextant l’urgence d’un projet sur le bâtiment. Le premier Toboggan fut expulsé le 24 mai 2007, et de nouveau laissé à l’abandon.

Le 12 avril 2008, soit un an plus tard, le Toboggan était réoccupé, dans le cadre des journées internationales de soutien aux squats et espaces autonomes. Outre la création d’un lieu de vie et d’activités (restaurant végétalien, projections vidéo, débats et réunions, concerts, etc.), l’occupation avait pour but de mettre à nu les mensonges et manipulations de la Mairie, prête à tout pour se débarrasser d’un lieu jugé “dérangeant” par sa remise en cause de la politique institutionnelle.

De son côté, le Mât-Noir avait ouvert en décembre au 19 rue de l’Île dans une maison elle aussi laissée à l’abandon par la mairie de Dijon. Depuis l’occupation, les habitant-e-s du Mât-Noir proposaient aussi diverses activités publiques : repas de quartier, ciné-club, concerts, recyclage collectif, débats…

Les quartiers du Mât-Noir et du Toboggan sont plein de maisons vides (il y a plus de 8000 logements vides dans l’agglomération dijonnaise) alors que nombre de personnes sont en galère de logement, à la rue ou recherchent des espaces pour développer des activités.

Démonstration en est faite une nouvelle fois ce jour : en parallèle des grands discours sur le droit au logement auxquels se livre la municipalité, c’est par l’expulsion et la répression que la mairie répond à l’initiative, quand certain·e·s recyclent ce qui est sciemment abandonné, mettent en pratique leurs idées, et explorent collectivement d’autres façons d’habiter, de résister.
